THIS WEEK ON ALL 4 ADVENTURE…
After running stuck and having to turn back last time, Jase, Simon and Jesse are headed back a different way with the goal of reaching the barramundi-filled waters at Bathurst Heads.
The water is running high at Kalpowar Crossing, making the trip across that little bit more exciting.
Back on the track, the come up against an obstacle they won’t be able to overcome… a locked gate and a ‘Beach Closed’ sign. With so much water that passed through the area, it’s not a surprise, but definitely not what they had hoped for. This throws their plans to head offshore exploring the islands into disarray, so it’s on to Plan D. They set up camp and put their gameplan together over the fire.
The next morning, they head out up the pockmarked road. Then Jase gets a call from a traditional owner who said he’d open up the gate for them to get through to the boatramp. So they retrace their tracks and head back to where they started.
Through the gate, the track is wet and overgrown, but they make their way to the end of the track where the makeshift tidal boat ramp is located. It’ll do the trick in the morning, but first they set up camp for the night… away from the shore where they spotted a fresh croc slide.
They wake to the sound of barra boofing, so it’s time to launch the boat and start their fishin’ mission. Simon is the first to snag a solid barramundi, and it only gets the other two riled up and ready to get their own. Could there be a meter-y in there somewhere?
As the day winds down, it’s time to head back for a cook-up. And these barra will go down easy with Jase’s Salt and Vinegar Popcorn Barra recipe.
In the morning, they are off again. This time they want to head to the Flinders Island group for a bit of WWII history and some history far older than that!
First stop is picturesque Stanley Island where they climb to the caves to see the Yindayin rock art, a mural of history which causes them to reflect on who left these records and what they witnessed.
Next they move on to the spot where they’ve heard there might be remnants of a World War Two radar station. Though with the crocs hanging around, they won’t be swimming to shore this time!
They follow a trail of man-made debris up the hill to where a concrete slab marks the spot. This RAAF Radar Station No. 45 was part of a strategic plan to protect Australia’s coastline. The experience inspires their imaginations, and as the boys travel back to their camp, they reflect on what that time must have been like.
