THIS WEEK ON ALL 4 ADVENTURE…
Jase, Simon and Jesse are heading back east into the gold country. Their journey begins at Palmerville Station, out near historic Maytown, in the Palmerville River region. They are warmly welcomed by Kerrie and Frog, the caretakers of this historical haven, who share their knowledge of the huts and the tin mining on the property.
With a bit of daylight left, the team ventures out to explore the remnants of the old mine, marvelling at the rusted gear and intriguing core samples. Having just hopped out of their ATV, it is a thought-provoking experience to consider the journeys of those who came in the 1870s, who traversed from Cooktown on foot with wheelbarrows and picks. It’s a stark contrast to the modern machinery of today!
The following morning, Jase leads the convoy armed with Frog’s directions to find the really old mining remnants and a pristine swimming hole. First they come across the old steam generators, testaments to the ingenuity of John Walker & Co. of Maryborough. It’s hard to imagine this giant machinery being transported in with horse and dray. The mine shaft stands as a silent sentinel of the past, a testament to the relentless pursuit of riches which didn’t always pan out.
As the day winds down, the team sets up camp along the dusty dirt road, ready for the next chapter of their adventure.
With the dawn of a new day, the team sets off in search of limestone country. They are truly off-road now with a mud map etched only in Jase’s mind. They forge a path through barely visible tracks and challenging crossings. Simon, with his caravan in tow, faces a formidable obstacle, prompting a necessary winch rescue. Jesse, undeterred, barrels up the challenging hills and gullies, his determination unwavering.
A limestone outcrop emerges from the trees in the distance telling them they’re going in the right direction. But it leads them to another crossing with both steep entry and exit that tests Jase’s resolve.
After watching Jase’s attempt, Simon opts for a slow and steady approach. However, he finds himself wedged between the banks, a predicament requiring a double winch rescue. Due to the acute angle of the vehicle and the brand new caravan, they all hear the crunch leaving the first, and most painful, dent.
Jesse, initially critical of Simon’s mishap, soon finds himself in a similar predicament, requiring another double-winch rescue. Jase has to jump in the 2500 to put his foot on the brakes to keep it from being pulled backwards in the process. Quick thinking!
Another washout looms ahead, giving Jase a moment of pause. The team gathers to assess and plan their next move. With a bit of landscaping, they hope to give themselves the best possible line. Despite their efforts, Jase’s vehicle gets hung up on the back diff, a testament to the challenging terrain.
Simon, with renewed determination, takes his turn but approaches at an unfortunate angle. The team’s focus shifts from the minor dent in the toolbox to the greater concern of keeping the van upright. Will Sir Rollalot strike again?
Some creative winching techniques are employed, with Jesse’s winch pulling the caravan from behind to maintain balance. With Simon driving blide, it takes sheer concentration and communication from everyone involved.
Jesse’s up. He carefully selects his line and, with the aid of the winch, conquers the challenge.
As they continue past the base of the limestone cliffs, Jase, spots a cave and can’t resist stopping to explore. The cavern shows another element to this beautiful landscape as a relic of an ancient inland sea. But the daylight is running short, so it’s time to find a camp to rest and recharge.
The quest for the waterhole continues the next morning, and the next crossing tells them they’re close. They go for a wander on foot, amazed by the water so clear there is nowhere for the perch, catfish, and a small water snake to hide. As they continue on, they keep discovering more great spots, but it’s not THE spot described on the map. Good enough for a tub though!
Returning to their vehicles, they continue along the track, hopeful for more promising signs. Finally, they make their way through a fenceline to find a stunning limestone pool nestled against a rainforest backdrop. It took two days to find, so they’re going to stay a while!
