THIS WEEK ON ALL 4 ADVENTURE…
Jase and Simon fill up their long-range tanks in Chillagoe, ready to hit the road and explore the goldfields. Their adventure begins with a splash as they cross a flooded causeway. They’ve got a massive trek ahead of them, crossing from east to west. There’s no way they will knock that over in one day.
The next morning, they head out to meet the Fish Whisperer, and their journey is no disappointment as the wetlands are filled with birds and wildflowers. They meet up with brothers Scotty and Stoney in Kowanyama, the place of many waters. Will the Fish Whisperer live up to his name and help Simon and Jesse catch some meteries? Stoney assures Simon that he was catching big barra just a few weeks ago.
On their way to the secret fishing spot, they observe a controlled burn off, a technique used to manage the bush. The cross the boomerang causeway and spy a Kennedy palm nearing the end of its life. Scotty finds a spot to camp, and Jesse sets right out to find the 4.5m croc known as Crocabarraboy. While a croc that size would send shivers down most people, Scotty is happy for him to be there, as his presence helps to keep the problem juveniles away. Try to sleep well there, guys!
Sun is up, and it’s time to head to the beach and cruise along to the river mouth. The going is boggy, so they stop to let some air out of their tyres using those handy Boss Air deflators. They give it the berries and make it to the beach on the west coast of Cape York. No time to lollygag, they start towards Camp 4. Heading back into the trees, Jase takes the lead and is the first to encounter the bogs. With a little extra traction, Jase pops right out. They head along the river to their camp for the night where they relax and plan their fishing strategies.
The next morning, the Fish Whisperer performs a baptism on the boys, hoping the ancestors keep their travels free from chaos and calamity and bring them a bit of good luck with the lures. They launch the big boat and head out with high hopes of a good catch. Jesse warms up with a little barra.
Scotty and Stoney head to the shore in search of some bush tucker. They’re looking for mussels, but Simon finds the mozzies. It’s amazing what you can find when you know what you’re looking for. And they found some fat juicy mussels. They spy a huge croc on the shore not far away. After it slips into the water, they go check out the slide to gauge its size. It’s another big one! Then the barra competition is back on. Simon gets a blue salmon. The excitement builds as Simon, Jase, and Jesse each hook a big barra.
They have enough to satisfy the hungry beasts, so they cook up their catch on the beach the traditional way. Once the coals are going, the barra gets thrown straight on the coals. Bushman secret: when a stick goes through the flesh, you know it’s done. The mussels open up to signal when they’re done. After a big feed, it’s siesta time in a top spot.
Getting the boat back out of the water is always more difficult than going in. Jase gets bogged in the sand, so it’s winch time. Will they get back on the road yet today?
A big thanks to Scotty and Stoney for sharing their expertise.
