THIS WEEK ON ALL 4 ADVENTURE…
Jase, Simon and Jesse have just completed the Carson River track, one of the toughest tracks in all of Australia. Now they’re going to tackle the CREB track, a notoriously difficult track in Queensland. But first a quick stop at the Mossman Commemorative Air Raid Cairn for a bit of WWII history.
As they reach the start of the CREB track, everything is lush and green. The very first misty crossing shows just how much rain they’ve had in this tropical paradise. A quick walk to determine the best path across, and these three adventurers are excited to be on their way despite the memories of the carnage they endured the last time. (Check out Unleashed 1.1 ‘A DIFF-icult Start’ for that expedition!)
Once they get into the thick of the rainforest, the track is steep and muddy. A bit of right foot, and they are all cruising. No trailers this leg of the trip makes the going a bit easier.
So it’s up and up and down and up, before they reach a cool little crossing. The sun is out, and it’s the perfect spot for a swim in the crystal clear waters of ‘CREB creek’.
The serenity ends and the stress begins as they make their way out of the valley. Jesse is first up in the Chevy, but the slippery slope sends him backwards. This track is definitely not for the novice! Jase gives the embankment a love tap with the 300, and Simon uses all their feedback to make it straight up in the D-MAX.
The next speccy creek crossing isn’t as sunny, and it’s not long before the first raindrops start to fall. Time will tell whether this is will be a brief carwash or if it will turn everything into a greasy mess.
As the track gets steeper and steeper, there comes a point where they have to decide whether they can even carry on without completely wrecking the vehicles. Have they chosen the wrong path this time?
It’s starting to become clear that the forecast may have been conservative. With steep inclines leading to steep descents, the risk of getting stuck in a slippery valley is becoming more of a concern.
Facing the longest climb yet, Jesse is feeling some apprehension about being the lead vehicle in Jase’s new ZR2. Will he manage to make it to the top without breaking anything?
While all three make it to the top, they spot the remnants of someone who didn’t. It’s a sobering reminder of how remote they are as they skid on foot back to the cars.
The rain continues, and Jase determines that the stopping and starting is killing their forward momentum. So they make a plan to keep going until Jesse in the lead car hits the highest point. So it’s one, two, three 4-wheel-drives up the range. But there’s no time to enjoy the view in this weather.
The downhill is a slip’n’slide, and Jase needs a winch after getting wedged in a corner to avoid sliding into Jesse. Simon follows and comes in super hot trying to maintain any sort of control. It’s all going on!
They get to a spot in the track where there’s an opening to a paddock, and that’s a sign to set up camp and call it a day. They cook up their supper in the pouring rain and debrief about the day. But will the rain stop and dry out over night, or are they in for a world of trouble tomorrow?
