THIS WEEK ON ALL 4 ADVENTURE…
Ranger Tommy has more for the Jase, Simon and Nige to explore on Mornington Island. Today they start at Gununa township and head down an old outstation track that Tommy hasn’t been on in 20 years. It leads them right to a soft tidal plain which means the Jase and his big 79 series break through the crust, so it’s time to break out the recovery gear. He pops out just as the tide starts coming in, and so they make a break for higher ground. After another saltwater crossing and some 4wding through the scrub, the track opens up to the cliff on the coast which looks like the perfect spot for camp.
The next morning Jase is in the camp kitchen baking up a treat. It’s a bit of a combination of a scone and a muffin that we’re calling Apple Scruffins. Mmm, scrumptious!
The boys tow the tinnie down to the beach and then hop in for a crossing over to Sydney Island. A Mosquito bomber went missing in 1947 on a flight from Darwin to Townsville and parts of the plane ended up washing up on Sydney Island, however the propeller that remains can only be seen at the lowest tides. So the boys will have to come back another time for that one. But they do have time to explore a mysterious rock formation that Tommy heard about from his grandfather.
Back on Mornington, the boys head back down the salt pans… and there really is a first time for everything! Simon meets a frilly new friend and Tommy brings the boys to an old site with an interesting history. And while out on the beach, the boys help Tommy with a border security issue.
There’s time for one last spot of fishing, and it seems that Jase is wearing his lucky fishing shirt with barra, jacks, diamond trevally and cod on the bite. Better luck next time, Simon!
